“The Peacock”
This Indian blue male peafowl or peacock is a large colorful pheasant known for having large iridescent tails used in courtship displays and mating rituals. It’s tail feathers, which spread out in a distinctive train that can be more than 60% of the bird’s total length, are able to be arched into a magnificent fan across it’s back that touches the ground on both sides. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains. This beautiful blue peacock is one of up to 40 such birds who would freely roam the grounds of the Denver Zoo prior to early 2020 when they were all relocated to new homes.
