Licensing Landscape Images | Landscape Photo Usage Rights for Print and Digital Use

Have you been browsing the internet for pictures to use in your next project?  In today’s digital age images and photographs are an essential component of visual communication. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but the right cityscape, landscape, or wildlife photo can help you convey information, evoke emotions, and add interest to any content. But before just right-clicking and saving a photo you found on the web, there are some important facts to understand about licensing photos and images. This short article provides an image licensing overview and describes the way I license my own photographs of our wonderful natural and built landscapes for digital and print uses.

Image licensing refers to the legal agreement between the creator or owner of an image and the person or organization using it. The license outlines the terms and conditions for using the image, including how it can be used, where it can be used, for how long it can be used, and whether it is exclusive or non-exclusive.  Image licensing / photo usage rights typical consist of three main types:

  • Creative Commons Licensing: a license granted by the copyright owner allowing anyone to use, edit and build upon the work for free
  • Royalty-Free Licensing: a copyright license providing the user the right to use the image with few restrictions based on a one-time payment to the licensor
  • Rights-Managed Licensing: a copyright license allowing the buyer the one time use of an image within the terms specified by the license

Once I reviewed each type of license, I decided to offer my  nature and landscape photographs under a rights-managed structure using either exclusive or non-exclusive agreements.  Each of images of the natural and built landscape in my online photo galleries are available for licensing. I typically license my photos directly and am able to keep the fees comparable with or lower than those of third party stock agency websites.

I have licensed images for a variety of uses including promotional materials and brochures, magazines, wall graphics, and home decor. If you’re interested in licensing any of my diverse range of fine art photography images please contact me. Prices vary depending on how and where the image will be used and for how long. In order to provide a quote, I will need the following information: desired image size, where the image will be used, how the image will be used, and the duration of image use.

Please contact me if you are interested in a quote for image licensing. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
