First Light at Chasm Lake

Taken just moments after sunrise, this mountain lake photo reveals Chasm Lake nestled beneath the towering peaks of Mt. Meeker, Mt. Lady Washington, and the iconic Longs Peak—the highest summit in Rocky Mountain National Park. The east-facing wall of Longs Peak, known as “The Diamond,” rises dramatically above the lake, catching the first golden rays of summer light and casting a warm orange glow across the water’s surface.  Inspired by Colorado landscape photographer John Fielder’s sunrise photos from Chasm Lake, I had wanted to visit this area of Rocky Mountain National Park for several years. Starting two hours before dawn on a summer morning, I hiked the 4.2 miles to Chasm Lake mostly in the dark. Arriving a little before sunrise, I was just in time to capture this fleeting moment of tranquility and stillness in one of my favorite national parks.
