Spectacular Alpine Lake at Sunrise

Hoping to enjoy a sunrise hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, I set out well before dawn this morning to make the roughly 2 hour drive from Denver.  I planned my departure in time to hike to Lake Isabelle in the Indian Peaks Wilderness south of Rocky Mountain National Park for some sunrise photographs.  Everything was going according to plan until I reached the entrance to Indian Peaks and found out the summer trail head parking area was still not open for the season and I’d have to park at the winter trail head.  This would add about a 6.5 mile round trip road march to the my hike and make it very unlikely that I would reach Lake Isabelle by sunrise.

It was still dark out and I was the only one around as I grabbed my pack and camera gear and set out up the road at a blistering pace hoping to get to Lake Isabelle as close to sunrise as possible.  Just as the sun was lighting the mountains of the Indian Peaks Wilderness I reached Brainard Lake and had to stop to capture the wonderful light on the peaks and their reflection in the calm, glassy water.  While not where I intended to be at sunrise, it was a beautiful and tranquil spot and I was all alone to enjoy the first rays of the day coming across the peaks and compose a serene black and white Colorado mountain landscape photograph.
