Washer Woman Arch & Monster Tower at Sunset
These are a few of the most distinct and dramatic sandstone rock formations in Canyonlands National Park, seen here in the soft glow of a winter sunset. The sandstone silhouettes of Washer Woman Arch, Monster Tower, and Airport Tower are bathed in warm light as the sky turns shades of pink and purple over the distant, snow-capped La Sal Mountains. Rising 500 feet high, Washer Woman Arch is named for its resemblance to a washerwoman standing over a tub, washing clothes. Monster Tower stands just to the right at 600 feet, with the 700-foot sandstone butte known as Airport Tower rising behind them. These spires stand in the canyon below Mesa Arch, photographed on the same winter evening I spent shooting this iconic arch at sunset.
