Colorado Mountain Photo in Magazine

I am excited to share that my Colorado mountain photograph “Lost in the Clouds” is in the January 2019 issue of Landscape Photography Magazine.  The mountain photo, along with a few paragraphs on how I created and composed the image is part of the magazine’s Behind the Scenes feature.  I always look forward to the next issue and thank Landscape Photography Magazine for the feature!

Here is the story and my photograph that was included in the January 2019 issue of Landscape Photography Magazine:

Driving home through Colorado’s Front Range mountains after a day of skiing at Breckenridge, I was captivated by this fleeting mountain vista following a spring snow storm.  The afternoon sun was illuminating the lower portions of Grays and Torreys Peaks while their towering summits were still obscured by the remaining storm clouds.  Luckily, I had my camera along and was able to compose this beautiful mountain landscape photograph before it faded away.

At 14,270′ and 14,267′ Grays and Torreys are the two highest mountain peaks along the Continental Divide They are also some of the more popular and accessible “14er’s” in Colorado given their close proximity to Interstate 70 and Denver.  Even though I was just off of well-traveled I-70, the combination of light, clouds, and new snow make a very compelling Colorado mountain landscape scene. I  worked hard to create a composition that felt like it was deep in the wilderness.  I chose a middle aperture of f/9 coupled with a 1/200 second exposure for depth of field and ISO 100 to minimize any “noise”. A 75mm focal length provided enough zoom to reveal details of the mountain peaks and exclude the man-made details along I-70, while still being wide enough to bring in the evergreen forest on the lower slopes of the mountains.
